Creators Challenge: Pick a Color, Tell a Story

Here are some of our favorite submissions from our third“Creators Challenge,” which challenged creators to create wherever they may be NOW, and to seek out inspiration wherever they could during this isolating time in the world. The theme was “Pick a color, tell a story”

Quarantined

I ripped a magazine apart and taped it onto my wall and posted two different series.  A series of self portraits using a red glass over my flash. Essentially what I wanted to convey was some of the people who I know who lost jobs or aren’t working anymore due to this quarantined and how everyday news has become more depressing.  I personally have been effected by this and my friends and family as well. I decided to create a story the best way that I could.

I May Be Blue But I Can’t Hide My Feelings for You

I just recently painted my door blue and it gave me the inspiration for the shoot. It wasn’t until I had the camera and lights set up that this series came to be. This quarantine has been really interesting for me and my now “long distance” relationships with everyone I love. It’s really testing my emotions, unsettled heartache, fears, and overall needs. So while I am alone and feeling this disconnect from my person and really everyone... I am trying my hardest to still send love and light out into the world, even if right now that is just a glance. We may all be a little lost but we have to keep our heads high.

Red Hot Cherry

This addicting bite-size cherry snack is my go-to for when I'm tanning outside in my backyard. Happy Cherry gummies by Haribo is my guilty pleasure snack, especially during quarantine. I'm currently living at my parent's home in San Diego, but all of my belongings are still in my apartment in Long Beach; so, with a limited selection of clothing and accessories, I have been living a simplistic lifestyle with just the basics. I threw on my red bikini, put my red cat eye sunglasses on, and took a pashmina wrap I got from Thailand and hung it as a backdrop! A fun and quick self portrait series I created with my favorite snack to enjoy during this past weekend's heat wave.

Something More

“This series is inspired by my next single coming out called “Something More.” I reached out to Paul because I’d seen the work he’d done with other musicians here in Vancouver; I love the way he’s able to visually display the weight and beauty behind music. Paul is also a good friend, so it was super easy to get on the same page about the vibe and mood we wanted to depict through the images. ‘Something More’ is a cathartic release that stemmed from a place of fear, inner doubt, and questioning the future. The song dives deep into seeking greater purpose in life & moving forward when things don’t feel right. We chose the colour blue because it helps depict the pain and loneliness I felt when I wrote the song.” - Serena Sun

“When Serena first sent me this song to listen to, I knew right off the bat that I had to create visuals that will appropriately reflect the weight of this song. The opening line, “gave me something special to lose, called it mine and wrapped it like a noose” warns against the dangers of holding on to anything too tightly. With this in mind, I wanted to depict that feeling, the part where you end up losing things due to holding on too hard. The blur effect that is utilized in many of these photos were done to help create that fading away feeling. The blue tones were definitely fitting for the space that this song creates. I’m super excited for this song and glad with how these photos turned out!” - Paul Fajilan
