Top 10 Photoshoot Locations in California

From sunny beaches to snowy mountains, California has it all. The word ‘picturesque’ doesn’t even begin to describe it. There is no shortage of incredible photo-worthy locations in this beautiful state of ours. How do you narrow down your favorites?! Don’t worry, we did it for you. These are our top 10 favorite photoshoot locations in California.

DRUMROLL PLEASE…

Big Sur

This is a classic choice for a reason. This piece of the coastline is ideal for any person with a camera. The scenery is unbeatable with all of its cliffs, beaches, and waterfalls for you to enjoy. We recommend Oro State Park, Morro Bay, and McWay Falls to name a few. You are bound to stumble upon many picturesque locations when driving this coastline. I must warn you, however, that you do run the risk of danger in the form of blisters from folding and unfolding your tripod so many times.

Artists Palette

Need I say anything? Look at this landscape. Are you kidding me? I can’t even believe how beautiful the earth is sometimes. If you want colorful rolling hills as your backdrop, make the trip to Artists Palette. It’s like Peru but a heck of a lot closer. Being located in Death Valley National Park, it is imperative you stay safe, plan your route, bring extra water and gasoline, and research the weather so you are fully prepared. While beautiful, it is not a trip for the faint of heart.

Twain Harte

Twain Harte’s name was derived from the last names of two famous authors who resided in California. That’s right, those authors were Mark Twain and Bret Harte. This is a beautiful mountain town with lots of hidden treasures, like TGS’ personal favorite, Lazy Z Resort! Every time of year is a good time of year to visit Twain Harte. You’ll enjoy crisp, white snow in the winter, colorful leaves in the fall, and refreshing little lakes for swimming in the summer—you can’t miss. Perfection is an understatement.

Yosemite National Park

People travel from far and wide to visit Yosemite National Park and view the Half Dome and Yosemite Falls with their own eyes. Lucky us, it is just up the road. Yosemite is hands down one of the most attractive spots in Northern California. We recommend visiting in the spring (April - May) or in the winter (December - March) if snowstorms are more your thing. Winter may be chilly, especially for those who hail from Southern California, but you will not have any crowds to contend with.

Palm Springs

When I think of Palm Springs, I think of pool parties, Coachella, and the famous pink door. This leads me to thinking of the Indian Canyons Neighborhood where the pink door is only the tip of the iceberg. The aesthetics found here are immaculate. In addition, other photo-worthy spots include the windmills, Indian Canyon, Thousand Palms Oasis Reserve, and many of the hotels in town!

Joshua Tree

Can you say FUNK? Joshua Tree is funky in all the best ways. This place is trendy for a reason. It feels as if you’ve landed on another planet. The rock formations are truly out of this world and make for breathtaking backdrops. Commercial photography requires a permit, but for other visitors, no permit is needed for photography.

Redwoods National Park

Tall trees, yes, but also widespread prairies and woodlands and rivers - oh my! A foggy morning in the Redwoods with the sun peaking through will take your breath away. For a little more open air, there are various beaches to explore and meadows to frolic through. If you are looking for a photoshoot with some adventure to boot, this is the place to visit.

Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe

If your favorite colors are green and turquoise, you have to check out Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe. Located near South Lake Tahoe and home to the Vikingsholm Castle. This spot is ideal for all things biking, hiking, and picture taking. If sunsets are your thing, try Sand Harbor. I doubt you will be disappointed.
